Team Expectations
Each team has 2 competition weekends a semester which Students are expected to attend. Students have opportunities to advance to higher levels by obtaining points which are earned based on placement. When a student completes a level, they have the opportunity to advance to regional, zone and national competitions. Student's do not need riding experience, a horse, or riding equipment to be on the team! We accept all levels of riders to try out for the team. Riders will have team 1 lesson per week with their designated coach. Our coaches are volunteer coaches and work the UNT lessons in with their client schedule. Lessons are done in small group settings (2-5 students) which gives the opportunity for students to carpool together. Students must be full-time to participate.

Dues
Dues are $600 for the English team and $450 for the Western Team. Dues cover all transportation to and from all competitions (including vehicle rentals, gas and hotel fees), 2 entry fees per competition, and 1 team lesson per week with the designated coach. We highly encourage all riders to work out weekly and take additional lessons to strengthen their skills. Riders who are Over Fences or Ranch Riding/Reining will have to bring extra money to cover entry fees since these classes are 4 per weekend instead of 2.
IHSA requires a $45 membership fee to be paid annually after you try out and make a team (this is subject to change per IHSA). Do not pay for this membership until you have been instructed by an officer to do so. Each student only has 8-10 consecutive semesters to compete on an IHSA team, so paying for this membership starts a "timer". This "timer" will continue to run even if you take a semester break from the team.
Other personal costs can include appropriate riding attire for lessons and competitions. This will be at the responsibility of the rider. Payment plans are available for team dues.

*These prices are subject to change, and are being applied to the 23-24 academic year.
Time Requirements
Practice
1 Practice per week
Typically 1 hour
Although attendance to practice is not required we strongly encourage you to attend every practice to receive sufficient time with your coach to feel prepared for shows and improve as a rider. Riders who are absent more than 3 consecutive lessons must meet with an officer to determine if it is safe for them to show.
Barn Hours
4 Hours per month
(3 hours in months where we have spring break/Thanksgiving)
Riders are required to complete 4 hours of barn chores for your coach each month as a means of compensation. We take up a lot of our coach's time/money and this is our way of giving back to them.
Competitions
2 Competitions per semester
3 days, Friday-Sunday
We compete for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) which gives opportunities to college level students to compete and ride at a collegiate level. We have a horsemanship (western) and hunt seat (English) team that we take to go compete. Competitions are based on equitation (judging riders' performance on a horse vs judging how a horse performs).
Club Meetings
2 Club Meetings per month
1 hour each
Our officers host bi-weekly club meetings that members are required to attend. At these meetings, we are able to discuss IHSA shows, fundraisers, social events, and general team information.
Fundraising Events
The amount of fundraisers varies, but attendance is required.
The team runs various fundraising events to collect more funds for our club. These events require attendance from all members to be successful and to run smoothly.
Social Events
1 Social Event per month
1-3 hours typically
UNT Equestrian hosts social events regularly for members to socialize and get to know one another, this is to harbor a friendly and welcoming environment.
Club Members
Club members are non-competing members, these students pay a $50 due per year to attend socials, fundraisers, and team meetings. These students are valued to help run fundraisers and other socials.

These students do not ride or have to complete barn hours. These students are allowed to go to shows but will not be riding or participating.
